Marine Corps War Memorial/Netherlands Carillon

{EAV_BLOG_VER:dbdc225f2703861e} A roughly 15-20 minutes walk from the front entrance of Arlington National Cemetery, lies  a plot of land (what I’d personally call a park) containing the well-known Marine Memorial as well as a giant bell tower.  Apparently, the bell tower was a gift from the Netherlands in 1954 given in appreciation to the US for its support in WWII.  The Marine Corps War Memorial is a statue which I have seen in pictures hundreds of times, yet could not have previously labeled it or stated it’s location. Due to the fact that the statue depicts Marines who fought in WWII, it is a common misconception that the memorial is dedicated specifically to WWII Marines, when in fact we learned that it was erected to honor ALL Marines who have died serving their country. Dedicated in 1954, this memorial is unique because it is one of few in which a proclamation has been declared requiring a US Flag to be flown over it 24/7.  Definitely worth the short walk from Arlington Cemetery to see this recognizable monument, and you can’t help but pass the bell tower on the way :)

For those into “stamping,” you will need to collect this stamp at the Cemetery’s Visitor Center, as a Visitor Center for this specific site does not exist.

The history of both the event and what the statue represents. This statue was built on donations, inpired by a photograph taken in Iwo Jima during War world II. This statue is in honor for all those that have gone before us, in all engagements in which the Marine Corps has been involved. It is the epitome of our military and what they do for our freedom. Sgt US Marine Corps.
